The Pirate Blogger

Pirate's sailed around under a fake flag and commandeered the ships they came across. I know a pirate blogger. He doesn't actually have his own blog, but he commenteers on others.

I miss him. Anybody seen him lately?

You know who you are.

Dunno which aarrghonaut you're looking for, but this pirate has taken some time away from reading blogs to climb the rigging at the day job, which has become a day and night job as the curious wreck of the news business I'm in founders on the rocks.

If you want to see a really scary pirate map, cast your eyes on this. I'm one of the spots of buried treasure getting more and more buried as each hurricane whistles through. Was perilously close to getting swept overboard just a few days ago.

Did someone say 'on the rocks'? That's starting to sound like a good idea.

That site is an eyeopener... I recently called the circulation manager of our small town Weekly Wipe to tell him to save the paper some expense. They throw the paper free in our neighborhood. One of two neighborhoods that don't need to have a subscription. I love it, but 90% of my neighbors never pick it up out of their driveway... they just pile up in the lawns and gutters, rotting in the rain or blowing in the wind. It's such a waste of time, energy and resources.

Sadly, with each generation that passes, an item we grew up thinking would be here forever has been shelved in an antique store. LPs, 45s, 8tracks, now it's newspapers, phone books and postage stamps. We spend too much time glued to the screens, TV and computer.

Wow, that's an amazing map.

Its a vicious circle of decreasing revenue resulting in less copy leading to reduced circulation. Maybe consolidation is the only way forward.

I love those sorta maps except when they show depressing stuff like that. Of course, the only paper I get is The New York Review of Books, which, curiously, is more about politics than books and is laid out tabloid style and delivered to my mailbox, so maybe shouldn't be mentioned here, but I've gone on so long now I can't be bothered to go back and write something else

I'm still reeling a bit from the concept of there being no print edition of the Seattle P-I. What are my Seattle friends supposed to read when they go for brunch at Patty's Egg Basket?

They're better off with the Mercury or The Stranger, anyway.

There will be a lot more rocking and reeling before the storm passes.

When it does, the country will wake up, as if from a bad hangover, and realize there's nothing in the house for breakfast and the only thing open is Mickey D's.

Smart writers will still be around, some of them blogging, though they'll be hungrier than ever.

But who will do the heavy investigative and public service lifting that takes major resources? I don't see news of another Watergate making its way to us via Twitter. How many would believe a blogger's jabbering in the face of a White House denial?

The Nixons and the Cheneys are licking their chops. They seem always to be well fed.
